The mathematical approach of equal temperament doesn't give the most harmonious sound aurally. The tuner can be quite misleading and disheartening when looking at intonation and tuning. I don't think things have moved on that much since the 1970's A late 20th century clarinet will have been made with almost 200 years of experience and development. The first clarinets are from the end of the 18th century.

The log book shows the serial numbers jumping around quite a bit for the Selmer/Adolphe Sax saxophones. Instruments manufactured after 1936 range in serial number from 1350-3600. Clarinet number one was produced in 1928, and the most recent serial number on is 545021, manufactured in 2005.
